Wheels for July 29
by Julie Ontiveros

You want change? We've got change in the Information Age, says Eric Spellman of Spellman and Associates, an Amarillo Internet company. Eric, who writes a syndicated column and appears on local TV to talk about Internet technology issues, said the fastest-growing group of Facebook users is "women older than 50." This new age has brought about all kinds of abuses and causes for worry about personal security. Eric had a helpful hint: Type your name in Google and see what comes up. He then said you should type your name followed by the word "sucks," and you'll learn what others are saying about you. Thanks for the fast-paced discussion about the Internet, Eric.

Larry Offerdahl and his wife, Deanna, played host this week to our Hold-Up guests, Pat and Jim Riggleman of Muncie, Ind. Larry's report included a testimony from the Rigglemans about the wonderful time they had at dinner with the Offerdahls, their free night's lodging and the play "Texas." And here's the kicker: The Rigglemans said they had such a good time that we're invited to stay with them if any of us decide to attend the Indy 500 near their hometown. Now, is that a deal or what? Thanks, Larry. Meantime, the Hold-Up continues for three more weeks.

The Pink Pig has been retired. In its place, we're passing the hat in a Pay to Say program. We stand up, say a good word about whatever's on our heart and we kick in some money for the Rotary International Foundation ongoing war against polio.

Say a prayer for Jess Ghormley, who continues to recover from his broken arm. And keep Renee Wilson in your prayers as well as she undergoes rehab for her repaired knee. Hurry back, y'all.

Brick Huffman announced that he is leaving the Club to take a position with the Boy Scouts in Kansas City, his hometown. Thanks for your service to the Club and to the community, Brick. Godspeed to you and your family.

Check out the District 5730 Web site -- http://www.ridistrict5730.org/ -- for information about the upcoming Rotary cruise. Immediate PDG Jim Cole issued this statement: "I am pleased to inform you that Princess Cruises has reduced the price of the cruise for most of the cabin categories. If you are interested in going, please contact our travel agent, Pat Renfro, at (806) 793-3001, or at (800) 543-1473. Please invite family members and friends to join in this cruise." The cruise is set for Oct. 16-26 through the Panama Canal.

Gina Rodriguez keeps getting her ticket called, but she keeps getting everything but the Ace of Spades. She drew the Seven of Clubs this week. Basil Walker, though, did win the coveted -- and legendary -- bag of Edes beef jerky. Hey, better luck next time.

Many thanks this week go to: Doyle Moore, song leader; Pam Rushing, piano; John Early, invocation; Bart Boxwell, introducing guests and visiting Rotarians; Jeff Lester, selling tickets; Cal Harriman and Basil Walker, greeters.
